How to Pack Light for Europe
Last Updated: May 18, 2026
Packing light is one of the best things you can do for your Europe trip. No checked bag fees, no waiting at baggage claim, and the freedom to hop on any bus, train, or plane without stress. This guide covers exactly how to do it.
The Golden Rule: One Carry-On Only
Set yourself a hard limit before you start packing: one carry-on bag (max 55×40×20 cm) and one personal item (a daypack or tote). Everything you bring must fit in these two bags. Full stop.
If you’re thinking “but I’m going for 3 weeks” — the same rules apply. What changes between 1 week and 3 weeks is laundry frequency, not bag size.
Clothing: The 1-2-3 System
For a 7–14 day trip, pack:
- 1 pair of shoes (wear your heaviest pair on the plane)
- 2 bottoms — one casual (jeans or chinos), one versatile (dark trousers)
- 3 tops — choose fabrics that dry overnight (merino wool or synthetic blends)
- 3–4 pairs of underwear and socks — hand-wash every 2–3 days
- 1 light jacket or layer — a packable rain jacket covers most European weather
Toiletries: Keep It Under 100ml
European pharmacies and supermarkets have everything. Ship your heavy toiletries in advance or plan to buy basics when you arrive. Pack only a 3–4 day supply of liquids in a small zip bag.
Tech Essentials
- Phone + charger
- Universal power adapter (Europe uses Type C/E/F)
- Portable battery (under 100Wh for cabin)
- Earbuds
Leave the laptop at home if you can. A tablet or phone handles maps, bookings, and entertainment.
What to Leave Behind
- Full-size toiletries
- “Just in case” items — they stay unused 95% of the time
- Multiple pairs of shoes
- Books (use Kindle or phone)
- Towels — hotels and hostels provide them
The Test Pack
Pack your bag 2–3 days before departure. Live with it for a day. Walk around the block. If it feels heavy, remove something. A good carry-on for 2 weeks should weigh under 7 kg.
